String Tension Guide

Getting your string tension right can completely change how your racket plays. It affects everything from power and control to feel and spin, and there isn’t a single perfect setting for everyone — it really depends on your playing style and what you want from your game.

As a general guide, lower tension (around 45–50 lbs) will give you more power, comfort and a bit more forgiveness on off-centre shots. This suits players who like a more relaxed swing or want easy depth without having to hit the ball harder. Higher tension (around 52–58 lbs) gives more control and precision, and is often preferred by stronger or more advanced players who generate their own power and want the ball to stay lower and more predictable through the court.

Most club players sit somewhere in the middle, and even small changes of 2–3 lbs can be noticeable. Polyester strings are often strung slightly lower for comfort, while softer multifilament strings can handle a bit more tension. The right setup also depends on your racket, your swing speed, and the type of court you play on.
